NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – If you were on Main Street in Northampton Tuesday, you may have noticed some crews out painting the crosswalk, but this is no ordinary road maintenance project.
A group called the Northampton Rainbow Crosswalk Project raised funds to paint one of Main Street’s most traveled crosswalks in rainbow colors, located right in front of Thornes Marketplace.
People that 22News spoke with in Northampton on Tuesday, who said that they felt the repainted crosswalk reflects the colorful nature of their community.
“This is the first time I’ve seen anything like this before, it’s actually pretty cool,” Dave Scott of Northampton said. “Northampton is so colorful, just very upbeat and lively.”
The rainbow is often used as a symbol for the LGBT community, and to celebrate diversity. The painting of the rainbow sidewalk comes just in time for the city’s annual pride parade and festival, which will take place on May 3.
