The state fire marshal’s office said the pipe bomb exploded when police performed diagnostic tests on it while trying to disrupt it Sunday evening. A spokeswoman says the pipe bomb was sensitive to shock and friction. It’s now a criminal investigation.

No threats were made to the town in the hours leading up to the device’s discovery.

Marshfield residents are being told to be on high alert tonight.
