SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – No amount of rain was going to keep the Springfield Lodge of Elks from holding their 51st annual fishing derby for children today at Forest Park’s Barney Pond.
Many of the children 12 and under made sure to be there for the start of this popular event at 7:30AM. Many generations have grown up since the Elk Lodge 61 held their first fishing derby more than half a century ago.
Derby Director Marty Sullivan told 22News It’s a good event for the kids, “You know it’s better than playing on video games and it gives them a chance. We’re having a good time. Plus, the rain’s slowing down.”
There would be trophies for the young anglers and perhaps a lifelong love for fishing which began right at the long running Elks Lodge fishing derby.
