Changes made at Cooley Dickinson Childbirth Center

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton has completely reorganized how care is provided in its Childbirth Center, following six incidents there in the last two years that the hospital reported to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

DPH, acting on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service, issued a report on the investigation of three incidents that resulted in the deaths of one mother and two babies.

In a news release sent to 22News, the hospital said it has made a number of changes. The changes include greater interaction with medical professionals from Massachuetts General Hospital, which Cooley Dickinson is affiliated with.

Other changes include steps to strengthen communicatio, at the Childbirth Center, with such things as twice-daily “Safety Huddles,” where doctors, nurses and certified nurse midwives review  all current obstetric patients to assure coordination of care.
