CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Chicopee firefighters have put out a massive fire at 864 Montgomery Street. A long section of the road was closed Thursday as firefighters put out the fire in what is left of a large barn.
Heavy flames and smoke could be seen from across town due to the fire, which happened after 3:00 P.M. By 4:00, the barn was reduced down to its frame.
A Chicopee fire dispatcher told 22News that the barn is located near St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Neighbors told 22News they heard two explosions from the barn. One woman who called 911 said she went up to the house and knocked on the door to see if anyone was home. Nobody answered the door, and shortly after that, she heard an explosion.
“As she was doing that we heard a big explosion. I told her to back away. And she came out down the stairs, and as she was coming to the car, it exploded again so we hurried and got out in to the streets,” said Karen Machnasz of Chicopee.
22News talked to Gill Patrick from Pro Tech Waterproofing Solutions. He said equipment was inside the barn, but most of them were burnt. His parents who actually live at the home, in front of the barn, were in Florida.
Tankers from Springfield and Westover assisted in putting out the fire.
Montgomery street was blocked from Dale Street to Granby Road while firefighters work.
