Attack kills U.S. doctors

(NBC News) An American doctor killed in an attack at a charity hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan is being remembered as a hero.

Pediatrician Dr. Jerry Umanos was led by his convictions and his faith to move to Afghanistan to treat children and train other physicians.

He, along with two other Americans, was killed Wednesday when a member of the Afghan public protection force assigned to guard the facility opened fire inside the hospital. A fourth American was wounded.

“Just a really selfless guy, and he knew the dangers in Afghanistan but he just really felt called to be there,” says Dave Wilcoxen, a colleague of Umanos at Chicago’s Lawndale Christian Health Center.
