Motorcycle Safety for drivers and riders

SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP)- Spring is here and more motorcycles are on the roads.  22News visited Harley-Davidson of Southampton to get some safety tips for both riders and drivers.

Leather jackets, biker boots, and helmets aren’t just to give you the “biker” look, there key components in keeping you safe when you’re on the road.

Sunshine and warm temperatures are ideal weather conditions for motorcyclists. But staying safe while sharing the road isn’t always easy.

One driver told 22News what he does in his car to protect those on two wheels. Orlando Burgos said, “I try to look around for bikers. I always try to be extra careful and watch out for bikes. Always try to be extra careful…looking in the corners, checking both mirrors.”

One of the main ways in staying safe on the road is wearing the proper gear. make sure your helmet fits firm and snug and that you wear outerwear to protect your body in case of a fall.

There is also eye wear to keep bugs and dirt out of your eyes. Some riders even go a step further and accessorize their motorcycles to increase their safety.

The sales manager at Harley-Davidson of Southampton told 22News what he added to his motorcycle for an extra layer of safety. “Loud pipes save lives. I do believe it’s helped me a couple of times. People know I’m right there especially on the highway. Or people backing out of their driveway a little extra crack on the pipe..they know you’re there.”

Massachusetts does have rules against excessive noise, so if you can’t boost the sound of your pipes, your motorcycle horn should be loud enough to warn other drivers.

April is “check your helmet” month. The average helmet has a life span of 3 to 5 years so making sure it still fits properly and is checked for damage is essential to keeping you safe on the road.
