WMass man admitted to Social Security fraud

BOSTON (WWLP) – A man from Ware who prosecutors say collected social security disability benefits while working an $80,000 per year job under another man’s name has pleaded guilty to a theft charge.

According to a news release sent to 22News by the office of U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, Carl Lynch, 43, entered a guilty plea at U.S. District Court on Thursday. They estimate that he received more than $50,000 in benefits that he should not have received.

Prosecutors say that Lynch started receiving disability benefits in 2003, but four years later, he began working under another man’s name as a personal care provider for an elderly man in southeastern Massachusetts. He made about $80,000 per year doing so, which would have made him ineligible to receive the benefits he was still collecting. Yet, prosecutors say he did not report his income, and lied to investigators, claiming he hadn’t worked at all since the late 1990s.

According to Ortiz’s office, he admitted the scheme to investigators in December.
