Man accused of Dollar Tree toothpaste theft

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A man who allegedly tried to steal about a dozen tubes of toothpaste from a Dollar Tree store was arrested by East Longmeadow police Wednesday morning.

Police Sgt. Patrick Manley told 22News that Ruben Matta, 37, of Springfield was charged with shoplifting (3rd or subsequent offense) and driving without a license following the incident at the North Main Street store.

Manley said that around 10:30, store staff confronted Matta as he attempted to take the toothpaste. He says the suspect dropped the toothpaste and got away. Staff took a description of Matta’s car, and officers arrested him a short time later.

Manley said that Matta was not licensed to drive, and had previous charges of shoplifting. He was arraigned Wednesday in Palmer District Court.

Sgt. Manley explained that personal hygiene items, such as toothpaste, are often stolen from retail stores so that they can be re-sold.
