GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A man from Franklin County has been cleared of all charges in the 2012 shooting of his girlfriend’s nephew.
The Recorder reports that Corey Sutton of Turners Falls was acquitted Tuesday by a Greenfield Superior Court jury of charges related to the December 2012 shooting of Zachery Drew in Orange.
Tensions between the men had been building for weeks. Drew was upset with Sutton’s treatment of his aunt.
The 38-year-old Sutton said he shot Drew in self-defense after Drew lunged at him with a screw driver. Drew was struck by two bullets and nearly died en route to the hospital.
The prosecution argued that Drew dropped the screw driver after the first shot hit him, meaning he was unarmed when the second shot struck.
Sutton owned the gun legally.
