Ahead of Marathon anniversary, Red Cross holding blood drives

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)-  The American Red Cross is holding several blood drives this month as we approach the anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombings.

The community is being invited to donate and commemorate those whose lives were changed that day.

The American Red Cross Massachusetts Blood Services Region provided nearly 600 blood products to Boston-area hospitals in response to the Boston Marathon bombings last year.

MBTA Police Officer Dic Donohue, who was wounded in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings required more than 46 blood products alone.  It reiterates the importance to contribute and be able to help those in an important time of need.

“Trauma patients like Officer Donohue are just one example of why it’s so important to donate blood or platelets. We are hosting a “Watertown Strong” blood drive in honor of Officer Donohue on Saturday, April 19, 2014, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Watertown High School on 50 Columbia Street. The blood drive is co-sponsored by the town of Watertown and Mount Auburn Hospital,” it said in a press release issued by the American Red Cross.

Several area blood drives are being held this April in honor of the courageous individuals whose lives were forever changed by the bombings.
