WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 27-year-old bail bondswoman is claiming self-defense in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend in West Hartford.
Angela Grasso-Cunha of Plainville is charged with manslaughter in the killing of 23-year-old Jose Mendez on Wednesday evening. Police say she shot him in the head as he was driving them in his car near the Hartford line.
A police report released Thursday says Grasso-Cunha told authorities Mendez repeatedly threatened to kill her and her family as they drove around in the car, after accusing her of cheating on him. The report says Grasso-Cunha told police she shot Mendez when he looked away from her, seeing it as her only chance to save herself and her family.
Grasso-Cunha posted $750,000 bail Thursday and is due back in Hartford Superior Court on April 24.
