Loon Pond in Spfld. in need of clean-up

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Springfield outdoorsman is on a crusade to clean up the environment. John Coughlin showed 22News what he found in a makeshift dumpsite in and around Loon Pond just off Boston Road in the Indian Orchard section of the city.

Coughlin said he found the Loon Pond area to be in the worst condition he’s ever seen. He’s not blaming the city or the state for letting this happen.

“The cities and towns, it’s economically impossible to keep up,” said Coughlin. “We can’t hire enough environmental officers on the statewide basis to monitor the way it needs to be done.”

What troubles Coughlin most are the number of cigarette butts he’s found in Loon Pond. He described himself as an avid fisherman. He claims the cigarette chemicals kill the fish and does other environmental harm.
