SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield’s Forest Park is home to dozens of different types of animals, some that could put you in danger.
The Park launched an observation project to identify all the different types of animals that are walking around the park.
Park Naturalist Edward Brunton told 22News some of the animals like the wood ducks or the turkeys are harmless, but it’s the coyotes you want to keep at a distance.
“Leave the area, make yourself known to the animal. Wave your arms, shout at it, you can even throw an object at it, a stick or rock if you feel uncomfortable. Also, keep your dog on a leash. That’s the best thing you can do,” said Brunton.
Brunton says there have been no reports of any Coyote attacks in Forest Park, but it is important to make sure you know how to fend them off.
Some of the other animals you can see along the trails are beavers, minks, fisher cats, ducks and foxes.
