NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – ‘Yes Northampton’ organized a meeting in the Hampshire County community of Florence to have an educational discussion about our states tax structure. Specifically, who pays, how much, where does the money go, and how can the system evolve to be more progressive.
Yes Northampton’s Pamela Schwartz says progressive means fair. She says people who make more should pay more and wants to explore ways to make the tax burden proportional to income levels.
“The fiscal crisis still prevails. There is not enough revenue to pay for the level of services that I think we all would like to see. If you look at the potholes in these streets,” said Schwartz.
They’re bringing in a guest speaker from Boston to talk about the tax structure.
Schwartz and Yes Northampton are the group who last year campaigned for a proposition two and half override, which passed, preserving funding for school and public safety.
The meeting was organized by ‘Yes Northampton!’, a progressive tax organization. The meeting begins at 6:30 Wednesday night at the Florence Civic Association.
