SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Some car companies are proposing a change to federal law in hopes that it will make cars more fuel efficient.
Electric car company Tesla, along with the 12-member Alliance of Automobile manufacturers, has filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make it legal to make cars with no side mirrors.
They are looking to replace those mirrors with cameras, arguing that doing so would make cars more aerodynamic, and therefore more fuel efficient.
The proposed change received a mixed response from drivers in Springfield Tuesday.
“Cameras seem a little like you’re watching a television, so that’s a little unsafe in the car maybe,” Chris Kube of Hartford said.
Jeffrey Cohen of Longmeadow said that he thinks that cameras may actually improve visibility.
“I think it would be better than looking at the side view mirrors, I know having a van the vision is, you know, decreased a little bit,” Cohen said.
Volkswagen has made 250 cars with no side mirrors, but those are only allowed to be sold outside the United States.
