STURBRIDGE, Mass. (WWLP) – A report of a stolen dealer license plate led state police to a man who allegedly took more than two dozen grave markers and flag holders from a cemetery.

According to a news release sent to 22News by State Police Media Relations, Alan Savides, 56, of Webster was arrested during a traffic stop on Route 131 in Sturbridge Sunday evening.

Troopers say that they pulled Savides over after police in neighboring Dudley had reported that a car with a matching description may have been involved in the theft of a dealer license plate. Savides was arrested for the stolen license plate as police investigated the grave markers and flag holders inside the vehicle.

According to state police, they determined that the markers and flag holders were stolen from St. Joseph’s Garden of Peace Cemetery in Webster, and Savides was additionally charged with 25 counts of removal of a grave flag, token, or flowers.

He will be arraigned Monday in Dudley District Court.
