SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – More than 400 families received free chickens today and it was all part of an effort to help the community.
Martin Luther King Junior Family Services held the event and distributed 10-pound chickens to families in need of food.
Ronn Johnson, the President and CEO of the organization, said they have seen the number of people seeking their assistance increase dramatically, ever since the cut in SNAP benefits.
“It really speaks to the need that exists for food in our community and we’re pleased to be able to be a provider to respond to the need, but it also demonstrates there’s a major condition in our community that should be addressed,” Johnson said.
The emergency food pantry worked with the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts to put on this event.
