Failed ATM theft; Police scouring surveillance video

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)- Two people tried to steal an ATM machine from a local market on Sunderland Road early Monday morning.

Amherst Police Sgt. Todd Land told 22News that officers were sent to the Watrobas Market at 81 Sunderland Road around 12:30 a.m. when a broken door sounded an alarm.

Surveillance video that the officers obtained showed two people smashed and pried open the front door to the store, and tried to steal an ATM machine.  The machine was bolted to the ground, Sgt. Land said.

The store was empty at the time and the thieves left without taking the ATM, Sgt. Land said.

Sgt. Land said the surveillance video showed the two thieves were wearing hoodies, but they were not able to get more of an accurate description.

The video does show the two thieves were traveling in an older model Toyota Tundra with an extended cab, and ladder rack.  Officers were not able to decipher a license plate number from the video,Sgt. Land said.

Officers remained at the store until 2 a.m. to try and help patch up the door with the store owner, Sgt. Land said.

Anyone that may have information about this break-in is asked to call the Amherst Police Department at 413-259-3000.
