New chair lift assists disabled members of Springfield church

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Disabled worshippers at Springfield’s Progressive Community Baptist Church can now attend services with less effort.

Church members on Sunday celebrated 20 years at their home on State Street by dedicating the forty thousand dollar chair lift.

This just the first phase of their fund drive to make the Church completely accessible for disabled people who want to attend the Sunday service.

Nikki Burnett, a member of the Progressive Community Baptist Church, told 22News, “And so phase two is getting our handicapped parking spaces and outdoor ramp so people can come directly from handicapped parking to the ramp inside the church.”

Their 1905 building is on the National Historic Register. It’s the former home of the Christian Science Church in Springfield.
