Autism walk held in Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Autism speaks of Amherst spoke with a loud voice Sunday with its largest road race turnout ever.

We’re very excited we had more than 1,000 register before the event. We’ve had over 200 register today, it’s the biggest one day we’ve had yet, so we’re definitely really excited.

Parents of Autistic children here in Western Massachusetts showed their support, helping to raise money to make people more aware of challenges families face.

“They’re good kids sometimes you have to learn that a little bit more patience and understanding why they’re frustrated with it’s really important to learn,” Chris Hall of West Springfield said.

But a group of autistic adults took issue with the goals of Autism speaks. Some of these protesters told 22News, they resent organization limiting their advocacy to autistic children.

22News will look into this apparent rift in what needs to be done to help people with autism.
