SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – The opening of the Forest Park in Zoo in Springfield is one of the surest signs of Spring. 22News saw how the animals and feathered friends made visitors feel welcome on this first day of the Zoo’s new season.
Families from all over Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut couldn’t wait to be among the first to meet some old friends. Molly Baker of Longmeadow knows exactly what she and the family hoped to see.
“We came out today to meet forest the new mascot and to see all the baby animals that are here.”
The new mascot, Forest the Chimp, did get the lion’s share of attention as one of the newest attractions.
Many of the families who came to the Zoo on t firhisst day of the season have been here before and delighted to be here again.
Julie Vooys of Agawam told 22News “The kids love the animals. They love the big fat bunny, he’s not out yet today”
The April reopening of the Forest Park Zoo has always been one of the rites of spring. For many it’s a positive reminder that winter is truly behind us and we’ve e got much to look forward to.
“The kids wanted to come out and see the animals our kids and beautiful day and we can feel spring and we wanted to get out of the house” said Connecticut resident Margaret Engeomann.
The Forest Park Zoo has continued a long tradition of getting so close to many of the animals; kids are actually encouraged to touch them. In fact, petting zoos at forest park go back more than fifty years.
