CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) – More than 200 students dressed up and danced Friday night for the first Best Buddies Formal Ball at Chicopee Comprehensive High School.
“Best Buddies” is a non-profit friendship club that pairs individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities to students without disabilities.
The goal is lifetime friendships, and it’s catching on. Western Massachusetts chapters have doubled in the last two years to 10 schools.
“It’s just amazing the number of people that helped out. We have over two hundred students from eight different schools, and probably close to 100 or 150 volunteers.” Anne Demeo, an adviser for the Chicopee chapter of Best Buddies told 22News.
“Buddy pairs” talk at least once a week, spend time at least twice per month, and gather for group activities at least once a month.
