Climate changes an increasing threat

NEW YORK (NBC News) – The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has issued a dire new warning. A new report shows global warming is a looming threat to health, the economy and food and water sources.

The Nobel Prize-winning group of scientists say the dangerous consequences of global warming are well underway, and the worst is yet to come. The report says global warming is to blame for recent floods, heat waves, destructive wildfires and devastating droughts.

“Nobody on this planet is going to be untouched by the impacts of climate change,” warned Dr. Rajendra Pachauri.

The report places blame squarely on greenhouse emissions like carbon dioxide, given off by cars and power plants.

Meteorologists say continuing pollution will further melt arctic ice caps, cause ocean waters to rise and warm, and drastically change weather patterns. That leads to the report’s biggest concern: Global warming’s affect on agriculture.

“In a future, hotter climate we’re expected to see a lowering of crop yields and an increase in problems with water availability both for crops and for people,” warns Weather Underground meteorologist Dr. Jeff Masters.
