SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An alleged heroin dealer known on the streets as “Slim” was arrested following a foot chase where police say he tried to throw bundles of drugs away.

Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that police recovered about 100 bags of heroin when they arrested 22 year-old Joshua Ortiz in the city’s Six Corners section late Thursday morning.

According to Delaney, narcotics detectives received word that a dealer named “Slim” was setting up heroin deals by phone, and meeting up with customers on Cedar Street, James Street, Brigham Street, and other locations in the neighborhood.

Police began running surveillance in the area, and around 11:00 A.M., allegedly saw the suspect making a drug sale to a heavyset man. Police arrested the customer, but Delaney says Ortiz ran, and began throwing bags of heroin, marijuana, and cocaine.

Police managed to catch up with Ortiz, who is now being charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. He was also arrested on a Palmer District Court warrant for marijuana.

Ortiz is scheduled for arraignment Friday in Springfield District Court.
