SPD: Officer’s gun discharged during struggle with suspect

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police have identified the man who allegedly grabbed an officer’s gun during a domestic disturbance, causing the gun to discharge.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News 20 year old Daneshell Cruz confronted police with a gun in the hallway of his girlfriend’s apartment on Ft. Pleasant Avenue around 7:30 Wednesday night.

Sgt. Delaney said Cruz dropped his gun after a struggle with police but then grabbed for one of the officer’s guns, causing it to go off.  No one was struck.  The officers were able to subdue Cruz and place him under arrest.

Cruz was charged with malicious damage to motor vehicle, breaking and entering at nighttime, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a firearm, and attempted larceny of a firearm.
