Firefighters live with grim uncertainty

SPRRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Being a firefighter is considered one of the most rewarding and one of the most dangerous jobs someone can choose for a career.

Springfield Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant told 22News, “Every day firefighters go to work you never know what the day is going to bring.  That’s what makes it one of the most exciting jobs, and one of the most dangerous.”

The flag outside Springfield City Hall is flying at half staff, as are flags all across the commonwealth.

There are 220 firefighters in the Springfield Fire Department who all deal with the danger of this job of saving people every day.

Commissioner Conant said the risk comes with the job, and firefighters learn to live with it. “An old fire chief in New York once said that when a firefighter joins the fire department, he’s accomplished his greatest feat of bravery, and everything else is just doing his job. In other words, you don’t dwell on what could happen, but you know in the back of your mind there’s always the chance you may not come home after the shift.”

Commissioner Conant said basement fires are among the most dangerous fires they go to, because sometimes there’s only one way in and no other way out.

He said, “Our hearts go out to the families of the firefighters.”
