HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) Another person in Western Mass says they were arrested over a dog licensing fee. Ann Musser of Holyoke says she was summoned to court over a late dog licensing fee.
She said she missed the court appearance because she is also battling cancer.
To make a long story short, Musser was ultimately arrested on Friday.
She called 22News after it happened because she said the whole thing doesn’t seem right.
“It really just felt really surreal. I couldn’t believe it was happening. It seemed ridiculous so on the one hand I felt like laughing but I was crying because it feels bad to be treated like a criminal you know,” she said.
The 22News I-Team talked to the city clerk in Holyoke about why someone would be arrested for something like not paying a dog fee.
She says it’s less about the dog fee and more about not showing up to court.
“A person can get up to 8 notices before they’re arrested which is a lot of notice but as far as just not licensing your dog goes, we won’t just have you arrested for not licensing your dog, it’s a lot more than just that,” said Brenna Murphy McGee, Holyoke City Clerk.
Dog licensing fees vary from community to community.
