SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s a sad day for Springfield Basketball fans, the Springfield Armor basketball team is set to leave the city.
I spoke with the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority who says the Armor just couldn’t sell enough tickets or build a strong following here in western Massachusetts.
The Springfield Armor was a D-League NBA basketball team that came to the MassMutualCenter in 2009.
With four seasons now under their belt, the team has not renewed their contract here in Springfield.
Springfield Mayor Dominic Sarno says it’s sad to see them go, “We worked very hard to bring the Springfield Armor here early on in my administration and I wish them the best obviously we’ll continue to look for other opportunities in the city of Springfield and the Mass Mutual Center.”
The MassConvention Center says although the team is leaving, they plan to give back some better game dates to the Falcons and book more events and family activities into the arena.
I spoke with the Springfield Armor who cannot confirm what’s next for the team at this time, but MLive.com in Michigan is reporting the team will relocate to Michigan and play under the Detroit Pistons.
