Officer’s gun goes off during struggle with suspect in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – No one was hurt when a Springfield Police Officer’s gun discharged during a struggle with a suspect in the city’s Forest Park section Wednesday night.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News police investigated a report of a “domestic incident” in a car parked in front of 49 Ft Pleasant Street at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When they got to the car, the man had already gone into the building. Police accompanied the victim to her unit to make sure she’d be safe.

Sgt. Delaney said when they got to the apartment door, the suspect came out pointing a gun, and police struggled it away from him.

“The suspect then went for the the officer’s gun, and during the struggle for that gun, a shot was fired.  Nobody was hurt,” Delaney said.

Police arrested the man, and the victim is okay.

Delaney told 22News the police saved the victim’s life because they feel it was (the suspect’s) intent to kill her.

Once police release the information, 22News will reveal the charges brought against the suspect.
