Arson arrest made after Westfield apartment fire

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP-Westfield News) – Police in Westfield have arrested a man who allegedly set a fire in his own bedroom closet.

Jennifer Mieth of the State Fire Marshal’s office notified 22News that James Gagnon, 50, was arrested following Monday night’s fire in the apartment building at 306 Elm St.

Our media partner, The Westfield News, reports that the three-story brick building is used as a group home administered by the Behavioral Health Network.

Police Lt. David Ragazzini told the newspaper that Gagnon had admitted to him that he had been upset with a staff member when he set fire to some dirty clothes that were in a laundry basket.

No one was hurt. The paper reports that the fire damage was confined to the closet, but there was smoke damage elsewhere.
