HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke Police arrested two men, one of them a known gang member, in a shooting that sent a victim to the hospital after a police pursuit Tuesday night.
Holyoke Police Lt. Jim Albert told 22News that a 23-year-old man was shot in the neck on Appleton Street and transported to Holyoke Medical Center.
Patrolling police officers were nearby at the time of the shooting, and assisted Mass. State Police chase two suspects who drove away. The suspects’ car crashed near the intersection of Gates and Chapin Street, about a block away from the Peck School, according to Lt. Albert.
The two suspects arrested were 24-year-old Osvaldo Vargas and 18-year-old Damien Alvarado; both men are from Holyoke.
“Police seized a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and several packets of heroin,” Lt. Albert said, “One of the suspects is a known gang member who is well known to the Holyoke Police Department.”
Lt. Albert said the investigation is still very active, but he said the suspects will be charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of heroin, and numerous motor vehicle violations. He expects other charges will be filed.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his neck area, and is expected to survive.
