Springfield Police officer in critical condition

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) — A Springfield Police officer is in critical condition after a car accident Monday night.

Just before 10 o’clock Monday night, the Springfield Police Department responded to a single car accident in the area of Maple Street and Union Street.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News off-duty police officer, Juan Tavares, 26, was driving the car when it crashed into a tree. Officer Taveras is in critical condition.

According to Sgt. Delaney, the accident is under investigation by the Traffic Division.  Preliminary stages of the investigation suggest speed might have been a be factor.

Officer Juan Taveras has been a police officer for the City of Springfield since December 2010 and was a Police Cadet since 2006.
