Victim of deadly Springfield accident identified

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – State police say that a woman who was struck by a car and killed, may have been dragged by the vehicle for a short time.

According to a news release sent to 22News by State Police Media Relations, Zoraida Moctezuma, 55, of Springfield, died following the accident on Boston Road in Springfield Wednesday afternoon.

State police say that Moctezuma was walking when she was struck by a 2007 Ford Edge that was making a left turn out of the Jiffy Lube at 1130 Boston Road at around 12:45 P.M.

The victim may have been standing on the sidewalk and then dragged for a short time before the driver, a 66 year-old man from Springfield, realized what was going on.

Moctezuma was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where she died.

Springfield police would normally handle such an investigation, but troopers say that they are handling this case because one of the people involved is a family member of a Springfield officer.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation continues. The driver’s name is also not being released at this time.
