Why the benefits of eggs outweigh the risks

NEW YORK (CNN) – For years, the egg has been touted as a no-no food, because it contains a high amount of cholesterol. However, nutritionists and doctors are changing their minds, saying eggs are an essential part of a healthy diet and their benefits outweigh their risks.

No matter how you prepare them, eggs remain a popular staple of the American diet. Over the last few decades, physicians have warned people to limit their egg intake, especially if they have high cholesterol.

Now, nutritionists are saying one whole egg can be part of our diet. Study after study over the past several decades has confirmed that eggs are not associated with coronary heart disease.

According to the mayo clinic, the average healthy individual should limit daily cholesterol intake to 300 milligrams a day. One egg has 186 milligrams of cholesterol, but it also has 13 essential vitamins and minerals and is packed with plenty of protein and antioxidants, which are good for the heart. Also, it only has 70 calories.

“They’re high in protein, lupine and zeaxanthin which are important for eye health. They’re high in colene, important for brain health, and their high in vitamin D, important for the bones and important for the immune system,” said Dietician Katherine Tallmadge.
