WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP)– The Route 5 tunnel that takes drivers underneath the Route 20 rotary closed three weeks ago for pothole repairs. The repairs were originally set as a six week project and Mass DOT representatives say the work should be completed as scheduled by the end March, weather permitting.
Transportation Department Spokesman Mike Verseckes told 22News, that last Monday, workers started an involved process of resurfacing the road with special concrete.
Verseckes said workers are removing the existing road surface in certain sections. Then the ground in that area gets heated and new concrete gets poured. That area it must remain heated in order for the new surface to properly cure.
This process is done in hopes to more permanently fix to the pothole problem, rather than just patching the holes.
Workers will fix the southbound lanes first and then move onto the northbound lanes. The tunnel will remain closed in both directions until work on both northbound and southbound lanes is complete.
In West Springfield you can report potholes to the city’s pothole hotline., (413) 495-1891, extension 1874.
