(WWLP) – Construction is expected to begin Friday on the state’s first slots parlor, and full casino licenses are expected to be awarded soon, but Massachusetts may also be considering a different kind of gaming; legalized online gambling.

Currently online gaming is only legal in Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware, but Massachusetts is now considering whether to allow it in here.

Backers of online gambling hope legalization could bring revenue to the state, and say that online gambling is a growing industry that Massachusetts needs to take advantage of.

Opponents worry, however, that it would saturate the gambling market, and come at the expense of the state’s soon-to-be-built casinos, as well as the state lottery. Others fear that it could cause an increase in problem gambling.
