Children selected in lottery to attend a Springfield charter school

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Veritas Prep Charter School in Springfield will welcome this fall 81 new 5th graders. Those 81 students were picked through a lottery from a pool of 106 students.

Veritas Prep is a free, public middle school. It has longer classroom hours than the Springfield Public Schools and provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.

22News spoke with Jesyca Stillo of Springfield; her son was picked Tuesday night to attend Veritas Prep with his sister who’s been there a year already. She said, “I’m very excited. It’s really nice here. She was behind in a couple classes, in reading and writing, and now she’s on her reading and writing level, and that didn’t even take a year.”

Veritas Prep opened in August 2012. It’s been growing one grade per year since then, and it will eventually serve Grades 5 through 8.
