SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It was the passing of the shillelagh on Sunday in preparation for the Holyoke St. Patrick’s parade later this month.
Continuing a longstanding tradition, the new Springfield Grand Marshall, Mary Beth O’Neil, celebrated with his predecessors celebrated at the John Boyle O’Reilly Club on Sunday afternoon.
The leader of Springfield’s sizable marching contingent is anxious for parade day March 23rd.
“Springfield always has a great big contingent and I’m proud to be there, so, we hope we have good weather. We’re ready to march,” said O’Neil.
For the Marshall’s reception Sunday afternoon, everything from the food to the traditional dancing and the wearing of the green was a proud expression of Irish heritage and culture.
