BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – Governor Deval Patrick is visiting Hampshire County Thursday to take part in the state’s annual bear cub survey.
The governor got to get up-close-and-personal with a black bear cub, and even cuddled one in his coat as he took part in the survey at the McLaughlin Fish Hatchery on East Street.
The cub’s mother was tranquilized while state wildlife officials did their work.
The annual survey of black bear cubs helps the state track the population of this species that has had a more noticeable presence in recent years.
The governor had participated in a survey in Conway last year.
