(WWLP) – Environmentalists have been pushing for Massachusetts to expand its “bottle bill” for years. Under the state’s current law, a five-cent deposit is added to containers of beer, soda, and other carbonated beverages. Advocates want to see that expanded to include bottled water, teas, sports drinks, and fruit juices. They believe that doing so would encourage better recycling practices.

Opponents charge that though the deposit is redeemable, an expanded bottle bill really amounts to a new tax on consumers, and that it also could be burdensome to businesses.
