Record-breaking cold for western Massachusetts

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s official: Tuesday morning was the coldest March 4 on record. The temperature at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee dropped to a frigid -7 degrees on Tuesday morning; breaking the former record of -4 degrees set in 2003.

Some readings that viewers sent to 22News via our Report It feature were even lower than -7 Tuesday morning.

Downtown Springfield seemed a little quieter than usual Tuesday morning. Our 22News crew saw a lot of people darting from cars and cabs to stores and office buildings. Those who were out walking had hats on, hoods up, and faces covered. One man on his way to work told 22News he’s not surprised this morning was a record-breaker.

“Brutally cold. I’ve worked downtown for 25 years and this is the coldest winter I remember,” Tom Manzi of Wilbraham said. “With the sun out it’s not so bad, but the winters seem longer now. It’s cold and gray. ”
