Frigid temperatures affect businesses

AGAWAM, Mass (WWLP)–The official start to spring is less than three weeks away, but as frigid temperatures persist in western Massachusetts, many are feeling like this very cold winter may never end.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone where the night coldness and the low temperature was this long, for so long,” Doris Preston, from Agawam, said.

Cold and snow has affected businesses too.  Car sales for January and February hit a lull, but others have seen a big jump in their numbers.

Sales at, a metropolitan delivery business, spiked 30 percent, and Carmex lip balm products sales are up nearly 10 percent compared to this time last year.

The Ace Hardware company is also having it’s best winter in more than a decade for shovel and snow blower sales.

“The second storm came around and we sold even more shovels, because that first storm when you took out your old shovel and it broke half way through that storm, you were out looking for a new shovel,” Manager of Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam, Bruce Drewniany, told 22News.

Drewniany also said there has been a big demand for rock salt and ice melt this winter, but the store is showing signs that winter will soon be behind us.

Fertilizer and other spring item displays gave customers hope that Spring is on it’s way.

“I’m ready for spring, warm weather, birds, being able to go outside in shorts and not having to layer up all the time,” Dorothy Sliech, from Agawam, said.

The 22News Storm Team is forecasting a slight warm up for the upcoming weekend.
