MONSON, Mass (WWLP) – The Monson Fire Department was on Whitney Avenue just before 7 AM this morning trying to put out a house fire.
22News spoke with Monson Fire Chief Laurent McDonald who says the fire was extinguished three hours later, around 10 o’clock.
“When I walked out nothing was really going on too much, a couple of smokes here and there, and right when the fire department got there that’s all of a sudden when it really started going good,” said homeowner Jim O’Connell.
The fire chief told 22News two propane tanks in the home along with ammunition kept the fire burning for much longer than originally anticipated.
O’Connell and his wife along with their pets all made it out unharmed. Although they are relieved, they say the losing all the memories in their home is difficult to handle.
The O’Connells lived on Whitney Ave. for the past twenty years, but it was a family home for more than fifty years.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
