HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The New Horizons Family Center in Holyoke hosted a special event honoring the Dominican Republic. The event is called a “Taste of the Dominican Republic” and it celebrates the Dominican Heritage for residents here in western Massachusetts.

Saturday night’s event includes music, dancing and of course, traditional Dominican food.

Organizers say the event is about more than just enhancing your palate. They tell 22News the goal is to help bring attention to the needs of young students in the Dominican Republic.

“What we’re trying to do here is trying to raise money to buy school supplies, uniforms, all the utilities that we need to be able to get past and above and beyond the eighth grade and get a better education,” said Sara Lopez.

Event planners tell us in most cases, students in the Dominican Republic do not receive an education past the eighth grade. They say all the proceeds from Saturday’s event will go to families living in the country.
