CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Who picks up your 9-1-1 call can depend on what kind of phone you’re using.
If you’re using a landline to report an emergency, your 9-1-1 call will be directed to your town’s dispatch. If you’re on a cell phone, a regional dispatcher will answer.
Here in western Massachusetts, that’s often a State Police dispatcher in Northampton. Trooper Todd Nolan told 22News a regional dispatch center uses cell-tower tracking technology that small towns may not have.
So if a caller doesn’t know their exact location, the dispatch can still help.
“When you dial 911, your cell phone is picked up by the towers. Then they can give emergency responders an area to actually begin the search,” said Nolan.
Trooper Nolan said the tracking technology is especially helpful when they are searching for injured or lost hikers and car accident victims in a remote area.
