AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)-  Four people will have to find someplace else to stay for the foreseeable future after a two-alarm fire gutted their home in South Amherst Friday night.

Amherst firefighters say the fire started in the rear of the split-level home at  25 Merrick Circle just after eight Friday night.

Amherst Fire Chief Tim Nelson  said no one was home at the time, and the fire had burned for awhile before anyone saw the flames.   There’s significant damage to the interior of the home.

“There’s fire damage on the first floor, and smoke and water damage on the upper floor,” Chief Nelson told 22News.

No one was hurt, but a pet cat was lost.

Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started.  The chief said they plan to interview residents once they make contact with all of them.
