Father-son team to run their last Boston Marathon

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – For more than 30 years, the Western Massachusetts father and son team of Dick and Rick Hoyt have been fixtures at the Boston Marathon. Dick Hoyt told 22News on Friday why this year’s will be their last.

The Hoyts have captured the admiration of millions throughout the world. Dick Hoyt told 22News, his chronic back problems can no longer stand up to the grueling 26 mile Boston Marathon. The father and son will continue to race shorter distances, such as the Olympic run.

“So that’s like a mile swim, 25 mile bike, and then a 10K run, that’s a good distance too,” said Hoyt.

Dick Hoyt stopped to speak with admirers at the Starbucks in Chicopee on Friday. They were saddened the Hoyts will stop participating in the Boston Marathon.

“They are an inspiration for father and son to watch them year after year, they’re steadfast so much from them, and you see it. I hate to see somebody give up something they’ve been doing,” said Hoyt.

Looking ahead Dick Hoyt assured us that although they’ve put triathlon competition behind them, down the road there is no end in sight for Team Hoyt.
