SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police say a gun stolen from West Springfield was recovered during a traffic stop in their city.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News Jose Rivera of Springfield was arrested after a traffic stop in the South End Wednesday night. Delaney says that police pulled Rivera over after he went through a stop sign at Margaret Street and East Columbus Avenue.
Officers allegedly found a loaded Smith & Wesson pistol during a search of his car. Police also allegedly found more than 400 bags of heroin inside Rivera’s car.
West Springfield Police Captain Thomas Wilkinson told 22News the gun was stolen during a house break in town.
Delaney says that police noticed Rivera was trying to hide something under his seat. He then allegedly threw a bag at officers containing money and 425 wax envelopes of a brown substance that turned out to be heroin.
Officers arrested Rivera, who Delaney says admitted to them that he had a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun in the car; a gun that turned out to have been stolen from a West Springfield home.
Rivera, who was already wanted on a warrant for assault and battery, is now facing several weapons charges, as well as a heroin possession charge, and a charge of receiving stolen property.
