Ads discourage women from hiding guns for others

Ads are going up on Boston trains and buses as part of an effort to discourage women from buying guns on behalf of men who can’t get them legally or carrying guns for their mates.

The MBTA is partnering with a Boston program called Operation LIPSTICK and is paying for the 600 ads.

The group says women are often approached to purchase guns for men who cannot buy them because of past convictions or other issues or to carry and hide guns.

The city does not have statistics on how many women have bought guns for others, but Boston Police Commissioner William Evans says a growing number of women caught carrying guns illegally is alarming.
